Elodea is Alaska’s first invasive submerged freshwater plant, and it has now been documented in several regions of the state. While it may look like an ordinary aquatic plant, its ability to spread quickly and form dense underwater growth can change how lakes and rivers function.

About the event

Elodea is Alaska’s first invasive submerged freshwater plant, and it has now been documented in several regions of the state. While it may look like an ordinary aquatic plant, its ability to spread quickly and form dense underwater growth can change how lakes and rivers function.

Join the Susitna River Coalition for a Winter Speaker Series conversation with Cody Jacobson of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources – Division of Agriculture. Cody will share an overview of Elodea biology, where it has been found in Alaska, and the ongoing work to control and contain its spread. In systems like the Susitna drainage, where healthy waterways support salmon and local livelihoods, dense aquatic vegetation can alter flow and affect habitat conditions.

Because Elodea often spreads through plant fragments carried on boats, floatplanes, fishing gear, and trailers, people who spend time on the water are an important part of preventing new infestations.…
