Energy Coordinator

The Susitna River Coalition seeks a reliable self-starter with strong organizational, research and communication skills to engage our community of Alaskans around renewable energy and utility work in the Susitna Watershed. The ideal candidate will poses a background in some or most of these fields; utility or energy work, grassroots organizing, community engagement, and strong written skills paired with a love for and knowledge of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
This position works at the community level to communicate the importance of large-hydro alternatives on the legislative and local level to protect the Susitna River Watershed and prevent the Susitna-Watana Hydro project. The right person will work well both independently and as part of a team, including staff, volunteers and partner organizations across the state. We are looking for someone who is innovative, creative, and passionate about a free-flowing Susitna River and the energy systems at play in the Susitna Watershed. This person will work closely with the Executive Director, Communications Manager, and Board as well as in close coordination with other organizations sharing our vision. The position is based remotely with preference given to candidates living or working in Talkeetna or the Mat-Su.
Duties & Responsibilities

Engage current SRC Members and MEA member owners in utility elections and issues. o Engage with candidates, organize candidate forums, elevate the importance of utility elections.

Candidate recruitment, campaign planning and support, voter outreach & education.

Regular engagement and communication with serving MEA Board members and MEA staff.

Attend MEA board meetings, virtually or in person.
- Represent SRC in utility and energy conversations. o The candidate will facilitate and run SRC led working groups and represent SRC and our interests in smaller Alaska Renewables coalitions. Agenda writing, facilitation, and capacity to organize required.

- Create outreach materials that communicate SRC’s renewable energy mission and priorities.

- Create communications including social media posts, infographics, flyers, written communications, and website updates to be disseminated by the Communications Manager ​

Follow the Alaska legislative sessions to determine which actions may affect renewables in the Mat-Su and/or the Susitna-Watana Hydro project. Assist in organizing and composing a narrative to communicate to the SRC and MEA community.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess many of the following skills and/or the willingness to acquire them:

At least 1-3 years of experience, Bachelor's degree, or advanced degree, preferably in the fields of utility or energy work or community engagement

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to reach audiences through a conversational and engaging style, and the ability to translate complex policy and science issues into messages that resonate with supporters, the public, and the media.

Experience working with and motivating other people, including volunteers. And an understanding of emerging communications and organizing skills.

Demonstrated interest in Utilities organizing and supporting Renewable Energy.

A willingness to travel throughout the Mat-Su and to work weekend and evening hours when necessary (1-4 times a year).

Demonstrated initiative and ability to work well independently.

Photography and video skills, ability to edit photos and videos for use in social media, brochures, and websites is highly desired. Basic graphic design skills are a plus (not required).

Experience working with rural communities.

Highly organized with the ability to balance competing deadlines and priorities, as well as working with a wide range of partners. A spirit of collaboration, ​

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities. The Utility Coordinator position is a remote, part-time position (between 10-20 hours a week) and can be flexible to meet the needs of the ideal candidate. The hourly range for this position is $22-$25/hr depending on experience. The Energy Coordiantor will work on a part-time hourly basis, providing his/her own workspace. This position is eligible for paid vacation, holidays, a small computer and internet stipend after six months, and a 5% retirement match for all employees after one year. A Preference will be given to candidates living or working in Talkeetna or the Mat-Su.
