The Susitna River Coalition is based in Talkeetna, Alaska and has a broad membership of over 23,000 individuals, groups, and businesses. SRC works within our community and with our volunteers to protect the sustainable natural resources of the Susitna River Watershed and advocates for the protection and integrity of the healthy communities it sustains.

 

Position Summary

 

The Susitna River Coalition seeks an energetic, reliable self-starter with strong outreach and communications skills to build a broad community of Alaskans to speak up for the Susitna River Watershed. The ideal candidate will have a background in communications, outreach and grassroots organizing and a love for and knowledge of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

This position works at the community level to implement communication strategies to protect the Susitna River Watershed. The right person will work well both independently and as part of a team, including staff, volunteers and partner organizations across the state. We are looking for someone who is innovative, creative, and passionate about a free-flowing Susitna River and the fish, wildlife, and people that live and play in the Susitna Watershed. This person will work closely with the Executive Director and in close coordination with other organizations sharing our vision. The position is based remotely with preference given to candidates living or working in the Mat-Su.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities.

  • Communicate SRC’s mission of watershed stewardship to broad diverse audiences.

    • Understand and be well-versed in SRC’s major activities and conservation priorities, including opposition to the Susitna Dam, background on the West Susitna Mining Road and Donlin gas line, fish passage and culvert issues, railbelt electricity politics and more.

  • Create outreach materials that communicate SRC’s mission and priorities.

    • Create and disseminate communications including social media posts, infographics, flyers, written communications, written reports, e-mail newsletters and website updates.

    • Manage a press contact list and write press releases as needed.

 

  • Engage current SRC Members in the Upper Su Region and beyond.

    • Coordinate online and in-person events that engage Upper Su residents and share SRC’s mission and advocacy with a broad audience.

    • Build a network of volunteers and community leaders to engage residents in the Mat-Su in stewardship of the watershed. This includes but is not limited to event planning, recruiting spokespeople and volunteers, soliciting stories and photographs from members. managing action opportunities and running booths at events.

    • Recruit volunteers to engage in high-level advocacy including testifying at hearings and participating at public comment periods, contacting legislators, and more.

 

Qualification

     

The successful candidate will possess many of the following skills and/or the willingness to acquire them:

  • At least 1-3 years of experience, Bachelor's degree, or advanced degree, preferably in the fields of grassroots organizing, public relations or traditional/digital media and communications, volunteer coordination, campaign advocacy or natural resource management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to reach audiences through a conversational and engaging style, and the ability to translate complex policy and science issues into messages that resonate with supporters, the public, and the media.

  • Experience working with and motivating other people, including volunteers. And an understanding of emerging communications and organizing skills including data-driven organizing.

  • A basic understanding of water, salmon conservation, sport, subsistence and commercial fishing, land use, and conservation issues.

  • A willingness to travel throughout the Mat-Su and to work weekend and evening hours when necessary.

  • Online engagement skills, including an understanding of social media outreach and basic website updating.

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work well independently.

  • Photography and video skills, ability to edit photos and videos for use in social media, brochures, and websites is highly desired. Basic graphic design skills are a plus.

  • Experience working with rural communities.

  • Highly organized with the ability to balance competing deadlines and priorities, as well as working with a wide range of partners. A spirit of collaboration, a sense of humor, and a passion for conserving rivers for future generations are musts.

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities. This is a part-time hourly employee (W2) position (between 5-15 hours a week) and can be flexible to meet the needs of the ideal candidate. The hourly range for this position is $19-$25/hr depending on experience. The Communication and Outreach Coordinator will work on a part-time hourly basis, with vacation and retirement benefits. The employee needs to provide his/her own workspace, computer and internet access. Preference will be given to candidates living or working in the Mat-Su.
